A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of shield rounded at bottom blazoned: Barry of eight crimson and buff, on a bend Or a demi-wheel issuant of the first. Attached below the shield a Gold scroll inscribed MAINTAIN OR PERISH in Black letters.
The crimson and yellow are the colors of the Ordnance Corps, the buff being for the Quartermaster Corps from which the organization is descended. The maintenance functions are indicated by the wheel issuing from the diagonal bend which in itself is the heraldic representation of the scarf of a military commander; the wheel especially denoting the motor repair and transport functions of the organization. The numerical designation is indicated by the eight divisions of the shield and the one demi-wheel. The motto is expressive of the characteristics of the personnel.
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 81st Ordnance Medium Maintenance Battalion on 27 January 1943. It was redesignated for the 81st Ordnance Battalion on 2 March 1955. The insignia was redesignated for the 81st Maintenance Battalion on 27 April 1966.
